In 1992, Ann and Rody Sherrill were exploring options for a joint business venture. Inspired by the compliments they received about their own home, they chose to share "mountain chic" with others through their own retail shop. With encouragement from their close friend and noted area architect Tim Greene, Rusticks was created.
The original shop was located in a small, almost attic-like space above the Greene & Associates architectural offices in Cashiers, N.C.’s Chestnut Square. After the store quickly became a local favorite, Rusticks was expanded at this same location in 1994 and again in 1996.
In May 2000, Rusticks expanded yet again, this time opening in a spectacular new location at Canoe Point on Cashiers Lake in its own Adirondack-style building, designed and built by Greene & Associates. In February 2006, the second floor showroom was expanded to create more space for new product lines.
In January 2021, Don and Pam Gottwald acquired the business from the retiring Ann and Rody. The Gottwalds took care to preserve the Rusticks legacy while offering new furniture lines and robust interior design services. Don and Pam also enhanced Rusticks’ support for the Cashiers and Plateau communities, contributing to important institutions such as The Village Green, Summit Charter School, The Cashiers Historical Society, and the Cashiers Highlands Humane Society.
After more than 30 years in business, Rusticks remains an iconic Cashiers institution.
